The Conditional Mood

The conditionnel présent is formed by attaching the endings of the imparfait to the stem of the futur simple. For the stems of regular and irregular verbs, see le futur simple. For the imperfect endings, see imparfait stem formations.

Principal Uses

The conditionnel présent serves several functions at the B1 level:

3. Hypothetical desires: J’aimerais visiter le Japon.
4. Future‑in‑the‑past (reported speech): Il a dit qu’il viendrait. (He said he would come.) This usage will be studied in detail with indirect speech.

Pronunciation

The first‑ and second‑person singular endings (-ais, -ais) are pronounced identically to the imparfait. Thus Je parlerais (I would speak) and Je parlais (I was speaking) are homophones. Spelling and context distinguish the two.
