The Simple Future

The futur proche (see le futur proche) expresses near or imminent events. The futur simple is used for more distant future situations, formal promises, and written predictions. It is formed by adding specific endings to the infinitive (for -er and -ir verbs) or to a modified stem (for -re verbs and many irregular verbs).

Use in Professional Contexts

The futur simple is frequent in formal correspondence, schedules, and commitments: Je vous enverrai les documents. La réunion aura lieu à 10h. Nous discuterons du projet demain. When the temporal clause quand refers to the future, the verb following quand also stands in the futur simple, unlike the present tense used in English: Quand tu arriveras au bureau, tu verras ton nouveau collègue.
