Conjugation
Negative Commands with Pronouns
Affirmative imperative constructions with pronouns are treated in imperative with pronouns: affirmative commands. In negative commands, the object pronouns are placed before the verb, returning to the standard declarative position, and the whole is enclosed within the negation ne…pas. The pronouns me and te retain their unstressed forms; they do not become moi and toi.
Affirmative vs. Negative Commands with Pronouns
| Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|
| Regarde‑le ! (Look at it!) | Ne le regarde pas ! (Don’t look at it!) |
| Donne‑moi le livre ! (Give me the book!) | Ne me le donne pas ! (Don’t give it to me!) |
| Parlez‑lui ! (Speak to him/her!) | Ne lui parlez pas ! (Don’t speak to him/her!) |
| Lève‑toi ! (Get up!) | Ne te lève pas ! (Don’t get up!) |
| Explique‑le‑leur ! (Explain it to them!) | Ne le leur explique pas ! (Don’t explain it to them!) |
Rules for Negative Commands
The following principles govern the position and form of pronouns in negative imperatives:
1. The pronoun block is placed immediately after ne and before the verb.
2. The unstressed pronouns me and te remain unchanged (Ne me parle pas !).
3. The order of multiple pronouns follows the standard sequence for declarative sentences: me/te/nous/vous/se → le/la/les → lui/leur → y → en → verb.
4. With pronominal verbs, the reflexive pronoun is placed before the verb and does not change form: Ne te lève pas ! Ne nous levons pas ! Ne vous levez pas !
For the general rules of negation, see basic negation. For the full pronoun order, see direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns.
Frequent Negative Commands
The following expressions are common in everyday use:
- Ne t’inquiète pas ! (Don’t worry!)
- Ne le leur dis pas ! (Don’t tell it to them!)
- Ne me le cache pas ! (Don’t hide it from me!)
- Ne vous en faites pas ! (Don’t worry! – formal/plural)
Examples
- Ce gâteau est délicieux, mais ne le mange pas en entier !The pronoun le is placed between ne and the verb.
- Ne t'inquiète pas, tout va bien. The reflexive pronoun te (elided to t’) is before the verb; it does not change to toi.
