Imaginary Conditions

The Type 1 real condition (Si + présent → futur simple) is presented in hypothetical structures type 1. Type 2 expresses an unreal or purely hypothetical condition in the present or future. The following principles govern Type 2 conditional sentences:
1. The conjunction si is never followed by the conditional. The imparfait is always used.
2. The main clause is always in the conditionnel présent.
3. The condition is contrary to reality or purely imaginary.
- Real: Si je peux, je viendrai. (I may be able to come.)
- Unreal: Si je pouvais, je viendrais. (But I can’t.)
4. The order of the clauses may be reversed: Conditionnel + si + imparfait (Je ferais du bénévolat si j’avais plus de temps).

Usage in Professional and Social Contexts

This structure is particularly useful for making polite suggestions, imagining improvements, or discussing projects:
- Si la mairie installait plus de pistes cyclables, les gens utiliseraient moins leur voiture.
