Beyond Qui and Que

The relative pronouns qui (subject) and que (direct object) are studied in relative pronouns: qui and relative pronouns: que. The pronoun replaces a location or a moment in time. It corresponds to English ‘where’, ‘when’, or ‘in which’.

Key Points

1. is invariable; its form never changes.
2. It may refer to a physical place (la ville, le bureau, l'école…) or to a temporal noun (le jour, l'année, le moment…).
3. After , the word order is normally subject + verb, as it is after qui and que.
4. The relative pronoun must be distinguished from the interrogative adverb (where), which introduces a question and is not a connector.
