Conjugation
Would Have, Should Have
The conditionnel présent (see conditionnel présent: polite & hypothetical frameworks) expresses hypotheses about the present or the future. The conditionnel passé refers to actions that would have occurred in the past. It is formed with the conditionnel présent of the auxiliary avoir or être followed by the past participle of the main verb.
Formation of the Conditionnel Passé
| Verb | Conditionnel Présent of the Auxiliary | Past Participle | Conditionnel Passé |
|---|---|---|---|
| parler (avoir) | j’aurais | parlé | j’aurais parlé |
| finir (avoir) | tu aurais | fini | tu aurais fini |
| aller (être) | il serait | allé(e)(s) | il serait allé |
| se lever (être) | nous nous serions | levé(e)(s) | nous nous serions levés |
Principal Uses
The conditionnel passé serves several functions.
1. Regrets and reproaches: Tu aurais dû venir. (You should have come.) J’aurais voulu t’aider. (I would have liked to help you.)
2. Hypothetical past (Type 3 conditional): Si j’avais su, je serais venu. (If I had known, I would have come.) This structure will be studied in the next lesson.
3. Unverified information (the journalistic conditional): Le ministre aurait démissionné. (The minister reportedly resigned.)
Agreement Rules
The past participle follows the same agreement rules as in the passé composé.
- With avoir: the participle agrees with a preceding direct object.
- With être: the participle agrees with the subject.
Examples:
- Elle aurait aimé ce film. (no agreement, direct object after the participle)
- Elle se serait trompée. (reflexive verb, être auxiliary, feminine singular agreement)
For a complete review, see the regular avoir framework and the être framework.
