The Past Subjunctive
The present subjunctive is studied in subjonctif présent derivation and irregular paradigms. The subjonctif passé expresses a subjective view of a past event. It is formed by placing the auxiliary (avoir or être) in the present subjunctive and adding the past participle of the main verb.
Formation of the Subjonctif Passé

Agreement Rules
The agreement rules for the past participle are identical to those of the passé composé.
- With avoir: the participle agrees with a preceding direct object.
- With être: the participle agrees with the subject.
Examples:
- Je regrette qu’il ait perdu son emploi. (no agreement because the direct object follows the participle)
- Je suis content qu’elle soit arrivée à l’heure. (agreement with the feminine singular subject)

Use of the Subjonctif Passé
The subjonctif passé is used after the same triggers that require the present subjunctive, when the action of the subordinate clause is completed prior to the action of the main clause.
- Present subjunctive (simultaneous or future): Il faut que tu viennes.
- Past subjunctive (anterior): Il faut que tu sois venu hier.
Frequent contexts include:
- Je suis surpris que le marché ait réagi si vite.
- Elle craint que les investisseurs aient retiré leurs fonds.
Examples
- Le directeur regrette que l'entreprise ait perdu dix pour cent de sa valeur.The trigger regrette que is followed by the subjonctif passé ait perdu.
- Nous sommes soulagés que la banque centrale soit intervenue à temps.The past participle intervenue agrees with the feminine singular subject banque.
