Conjugation

From Verbs to Nouns

In professional and academic French, a verb phrase is frequently replaced by a noun derived from the same verb. This process, known as nominalisation, produces a more concise and formal style. For instance, the clause quand on a décidé de… can be replaced by la décision de…. The resulting noun often ends in -tion, -ment, or -age.

Common Verbal Nominalizations

Constructing a Nominalised Sentence

The nominalisation follows a regular procedure:

  1. Identify the verb to be replaced.
  2. Select the corresponding noun.
  3. Introduce the original subject after the noun using de or par, particularly if the original verb was in the active voice.
  4. If the verb had a direct object, it is often placed after de.

Example:
- Verb phrase: Le gouvernement a décidé de réduire les impôts.
- Nominalised: La décision du gouvernement de réduire les impôts a été annoncée.

This structure is widely used in reports, summaries, and formal correspondence.
