Some family terms have already appeared in earlier lessons: le père, la mère, le frère, la sœur. This lesson presents the complete set of direct relatives. These nouns are essential for describing household composition and close relationships.

Using Family Vocabulary

To describe a family, combine the new nouns with verbs such as avoir and être. For example: J’ai un frère et deux sœurs. Mon père s’appelle Marc. Mes grands-parents habitent en France. Numbers, ages, nationalities, and professions can be added: Ma mère est professeur. Elle a 45 ans.

Possessive Adjectives (Preview)

The forms mon (my, masculine), ma (my, feminine), and mes (my, plural) are used to link a noun to the speaker: mon père, ma mère, mes frères. A complete treatment of possessive adjectives will follow in a subsequent grammar lesson.

Examples

J'ai une grande famille : mon père, ma mère, trois frères et une sœur.
I have a big family. Note mon père (masculine) and ma mère (feminine).
Mes grands-parents habitent au Canada.
My grandparents live in Canada. Mes is the plural possessive; au Canada uses the masculine preposition.
