Adjectives and Agreement

Adjectives such as grand, petit, sympa, and the nationality adjectives have already appeared in previous lessons. In French, an adjective must agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the noun it modifies. This lesson presents the regular patterns of agreement and introduces a set of common descriptive adjectives.

Rules of Agreement

1. Feminine: normally formed by adding -e to the masculine form (grandgrande). If the masculine already ends in -e, no change occurs (jeune).
2. Plural: add -s to the singular form (grands, grandes). If the singular already ends in -s or -x, no further change is needed.
3. Position: most adjectives are placed after the noun (une voiture rouge). Common exceptions that precede the noun include grand, petit, beau, bon, jeune, vieux (une grande maison, un petit chat).
4. Special forms: beau and vieux have alternative masculine singular forms before a vowel or silent h: un bel homme, un vieil ami.
