Constructing a Self‑Introduction

A full self‑introduction includes stating one’s name, origin, age, and profession. These sentences combine greetings (see greetings and salutations) with the verb être (see conjugation of être) and a small set of new expressions.

Numbers 1–10 (Preview)

Age is expressed with the verb avoir (to have). The numbers 1–10 are given below; a complete lesson on numbers will follow.

un = 1, deux = 2, trois = 3, quatre = 4, cinq = 5, six = 6, sept = 7, huit = 8, neuf = 9, dix = 10.

For ages such as 20 and 30, the words vingt and trente are used: J’ai vingt ans, J’ai trente ans.

Masculine and Feminine Agreement

Adjectives of nationality and profession agree with the gender of the speaker. The feminine form typically adds an ‑e (which is silent).

Je suis français (masculine) → Je suis française (feminine)
Je suis étudiant → Je suis étudiante
