Additional Nuances
The impersonal verb falloir also participates in this system:
- Il faudrait que + subjunctive softens a necessity: Il faudrait que les pays coopèrent. (Countries should cooperate.)
- Il aurait fallu que + subjonctif passé expresses a past necessity that was not fulfilled: Il aurait fallu que le gouvernement agisse plus tôt. (The government should have acted earlier.)
The expression j’aurais voulu + infinitive conveys a past wish: J’aurais voulu participer au sommet. (I would have liked to participate in the summit.)
Selecting the appropriate modal form enables the speaker to adjust the tone from diplomatic advice to direct reproach, or from a polite suggestion to a regret about a missed opportunity.
