What aspect adds

Grammatical aspect specifies how an action unfolds in time. French marks aspect through periphrases and prefixes rather than through dedicated verb endings, so the same action can be presented as starting, repeating, or merely attempted. Il commence à comprendre. presents the action at its beginning, Il relit le rapport. presents it as repeating, and Il essaie de comprendre. presents it as attempted rather than completed. Each periphrasis adds a distinct dimension of meaning that the verb alone does not carry, and the choice among them belongs to the same expressive decisions as vocabulary and tense.

Inchoative aspect

The inchoative aspect marks the beginning of an action. Se mettre à and commencer à are the two most frequent markers, and each takes an infinitive. Être sur le point de marks an action about to begin, while the futur proche built on aller places the start just ahead.

Il se met à pleuvoir. — the rain starts
Elle commence à comprendre. — understanding begins
Nous sommes sur le point de partir. — departure is imminent

The three markers differ in register: commencer à is neutral, while se mettre à is slightly more informal and often marks a sudden start.

Iterative aspect

The iterative aspect marks repetition of an action. French marks it in three ways: through the prefix re-, through periphrases such as ne pas arrêter de and avoir beau, and through time adverbials such as souvent or à plusieurs reprises.

Il relit le rapport. — the action repeats
Elle n'arrête pas de parler. — the action continues
Il a beau essayer, il échoue. — the attempt repeats without result

The prefix re- appears on a large family of verbs and adds the sense of doing something again. The periphrasis avoir beau combines repetition with a negative outcome, since the repeated attempt does not produce the expected result.

Elle commence à comprendre.

The neutral marker commencer à presents the beginning of understanding without marking it as sudden.

Il relit le rapport pour la troisième fois.

The prefix re- on lire adds the iterative dimension, and the time expression reinforces the repetition.

Il a beau essayer, il échoue.
