Avoir mal à (to have a pain in)

Usage Note

The expression avoir mal à is always followed by a definite article, which contracts with à in the same way as the preposition à alone: à + le becomes au and à + les becomes aux. The structure is avoir mal + à + definite article + body part. For the contractions, see cardinal prepositions.

Examples

J’ai mal à la tête et j’ai de la fièvre depuis ce matin.
J’ai mal à la tête (headache) and j’ai de la fièvre (fever) describe two common symptoms.
Prenez un comprimé trois fois par jour après les repas.
Dosage instruction: trois fois par jour and après les repas.
