The Most and the Least

The comparative structures plus…que, moins…que, and aussi…que are studied in the comparative framework. The superlative is used to single out one element from a group as possessing the highest or lowest degree of a quality. It is formed with the definite article (le, la, les) followed by plus or moins and the adjective.

Superlative with Adjectives

Superlative with Nouns (Quantity)

To express the greatest or smallest quantity of something, the construction is le plus de or le moins de followed by the noun (without an article).

- C’est Thomas qui a le plus de livres.
- C’est Marie qui fait le moins de bruit.

Position of the Adjective

The definite article must always precede the noun. If the adjective normally follows the noun, the superlative expression is placed after the noun as well: le restaurant le plus cher. For adjectives that regularly precede the noun (e.g., grand, petit, bon), the superlative may be placed before the noun: le plus grand magasin. Both patterns are permissible with certain adjectives, though usage can vary.

The adjective bon has an irregular superlative form: le meilleur (the best) for the masculine singular, with the regular feminine la meilleure and plural forms les meilleurs / les meilleures.

Examples

À mon avis, c'est la plus belle place de la ville.
Superlative of beau: la plus belle is placed before the feminine singular noun place.
Quel est le pays le moins cher pour voyager ?
The adjective cher follows the noun pays, so the superlative le moins cher is placed after it.
