Grammar
The “Ne” That Does Not Negate
The expletive ne was introduced after craindre que and avoir peur que in advanced subjunctive triggers: emotional spectra. This formal, stylistic particle appears in several other constructions and carries no negative meaning; it simply contributes to a refined, literary register.
Contexts Requiring or Allowing the Pleonastic “Ne”
| Context | Example |
|---|---|
| After verbs of fear (craindre que, avoir peur que, redouter que) | Je crains qu’il ne vienne. (I fear he may come – no negation) |
| After avant que (before) | Dépêchons‑nous avant qu’il ne pleuve. (Let’s hurry before it rains.) |
| After à moins que (unless) | Nous irons à moins qu’il ne fasse trop froid. (We’ll go unless it’s too cold.) |
| After comparative plus / moins / meilleur… que (when the main clause is affirmative) | Le résultat est meilleur qu’on ne le pensait. (The result is better than we thought.) |
| After sans que (without) | Il est entré sans qu’on ne l’entende. (He came in without anyone hearing him.) |
Distinction from True Negation
The pleonastic ne is never accompanied by pas. If ne…pas appears after these structures, it constitutes a real negation.
- Je crains qu’il ne vienne. (I fear he may come.)
- Je crains qu’il ne vienne pas. (I fear he may not come.)
In everyday spoken French, the pleonastic ne is often omitted, but in formal writing and literature it is required after avant que, à moins que, and comparatives, and is strongly recommended after verbs of fear.
Examples
- Avant que la réunion ne commence, lisez le dossier. The pleonastic ne after avant que is a formal stylistic marker, not a negation.
- Ce traité est plus avantageux qu’on ne l’imaginait. The comparative plus avantageux que triggers the pleonastic ne in the subordinate clause.
