The Negation Bracket

To negate a verb in French, the particle ne (or n' before a vowel or silent h) is placed directly before the conjugated verb, and pas is placed directly after it. This ne…pas structure functions with nearly all verb types introduced thus far.

Negation with Different Verb Types

PositiveNegativeVerb Type
Je parle français.Je ne parle pas français.regular -er verb
Tu es étudiant.Tu n'es pas étudiant.être (irregular)
Il a un frère.Il n'a pas de frère.avoir + indefinite article → de
Nous allons au cinéma.Nous n'allons pas au cinéma.aller (irregular)
Vous faites du sport.Vous ne faites pas de sport.faire + partitive article → de
Elle s'appelle Marie.Elle ne s'appelle pas Marie.pronominal verb

Key Rules

Elision applies when ne precedes a vowel or silent h: je n'aime pas, il n'habite pas.

After a negative verb, the indefinite articles un, une, and des, as well as the partitive articles du, de la, and des, change to de (or d' before a vowel): J'ai un chien.Je n'ai pas de chien. For a full treatment of these articles, see indefinite articles.

In pronominal verbs, ne precedes the reflexive pronoun: je ne me lève pas. For pronominal verb structure, see pronominal and reflexive verbs.

In informal spoken French, ne is often dropped (Je parle pas), but it is required in writing and formal speech.

Application with Known Vocabulary

Negation allows the expression of what one does not do, does not have, or does not like. Examples: Je ne travaille pas le dimanche. Nous n'avons pas de cours le mercredi. Il n'aime pas le café.
