Deriving adverbs of manner from adjectives by adding -ment to the feminine form.
Grammar
From Adjective to Adverb
Many French adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix -ment to the feminine form of a qualifying adjective. This process converts a description of a noun into a description of a verb. The adjectives themselves agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify; for a review of adjective agreement, see colours and basic descriptive adjectives.
Formation Rule
| Step | Example with lent (slow) |
|---|---|
| 1. Take the feminine form of the adjective | lente |
| 2. Add -ment | lentement (slowly) |

Irregular Adverbs
A small number of high‑frequency adverbs do not follow the regular pattern and must be learned separately:
- bon → bien (good → well)
- mauvais → mal (bad → badly)
- meilleur → mieux (better → better)
The adverb peu (little) is a quantifier, not a manner adverb derived from petit.
Position of Adverbs
Adverbs of manner are generally placed after the conjugated verb they modify:
- Il parle lentement.
- Elle a répondu rapidement.
In the passé composé, short adverbs may be placed between the auxiliary and the past participle (Il a rapidement compris.), but the position after the past participle is always correct (Il a compris rapidement.). For the formation of the passé composé, see the regular avoir framework.
Examples
- Parlez plus lentement, s'il vous plaît.The adverb lentement modifies the imperative parlez.
- Il a répondu très poliment.Poliment derives from the feminine adjective polie.
