Grammar

The Pronoun for Places and Things

The adverbial pronoun y replaces a location or an inanimate object introduced by the preposition à. It also replaces phrases with dans, en, sur, and similar spatial expressions when they do not refer to a person. For the use of à and dans, see cardinal prepositions. For the object pronouns that replace people, see direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns.

Y – Replacement Rules

Original SentenceWith YReplaced Phrase
Je vais à la gare.J'y vais.à la gare
Nous sommes dans le restaurant.Nous y sommes.dans le restaurant
Il habite en France.Il y habite.en France
Tu as mis le livre sur la table ?Tu l'y as mis.sur la table (with direct object pronoun l')

Placement of Y

The pronoun y follows the same placement rules as other unstressed object pronouns: it is placed immediately before the conjugated verb.

- Present: J'y travaille.
- Infinitive construction: Il veut y aller.
- Passé composé with être: Nous y sommes allés. (The pronoun precedes the auxiliary.)

In negative sentences, ne…pas encloses the pronoun and the verb: Je n'y vais pas. Nous n'y sommes pas restés. For the formation of the passé composé with être, see the être framework.

Y with Other Object Pronouns

When a direct object pronoun (le, la, les) is present, y is placed after the direct object pronoun and before the verb: Je le mets sur la tableJe l’y mets. This combined pronoun order will be practised systematically in a later lesson.
