Agreement of the Past Participle
When être is the auxiliary, the past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject.
- Feminine singular: add -e (Elle est allée.)
- Masculine plural: add -s (Nous sommes partis.)
- Feminine plural: add -es (Elles sont venues.)
If the subject contains both masculine and feminine referents, the masculine plural form is used: Marie et Paul sont allés.
Negation and Questions
Negation encloses the auxiliary and the past participle: Je ne suis pas allé. Elle n’est pas venue. Questions are formed by subject‑auxiliary inversion or with est‑ce que: Es‑tu parti ? Est‑ce qu’il est arrivé ? For the general rules of interrogation, see yes/no questions and questions with est-ce que.
Examples
- Hier, je suis allée au supermarché et j'ai acheté des légumes.Feminine speaker: allée agrees with je (feminine).
- Mes parents sont partis en vacances. Ils sont restés une semaine.Masculine plural subject: partis and restés both add -s.
