Inversion for Elegance
In formal written French, when certain adverbs or adverbial phrases are placed at the beginning of a sentence, the subject and verb are inverted. This structure is frequent in essays, reports, and literary texts. It adds sophistication and emphasis.
Adverbs That Trigger Inversion
| Adverb / Phrase | Meaning | Example with Inversion |
|---|---|---|
| peut‑être | perhaps / maybe | Peut‑être les négociations aboutiront‑elles à un accord. |
| à peine | hardly / barely | À peine le sommet était‑il terminé qu’une nouvelle crise éclata. |
| sans doute | no doubt / probably | Sans doute la transition énergétique demandera‑t‑elle des efforts. |
| aussi (meaning ‘therefore’) | therefore / so | Aussi le gouvernement a‑t‑il décidé d’investir dans le renouvelable. |
| tout au plus | at most | Tout au plus peut‑on espérer une stabilisation. |
How to Form the Inversion
The procedure for inversion is as follows:
- Place the adverb or phrase at the beginning of the sentence.
- Invert the verb and the subject pronoun, connecting them with a hyphen.
- If the verb ends in a vowel and the pronoun begins with a vowel, insert a ‑t‑ for euphony: a‑t‑il, demandera‑t‑elle.
- If the subject is a noun, it is placed before the verb, and a corresponding pronoun is added after the verb: Le ministre a‑t‑il déclaré…
In everyday spoken French, inversion after these adverbs is rare and the normal word order is preferred. In formal writing, however, inversion is expected.
Note on Aussi
The adverb aussi meaning ‘also’ does not trigger inversion. Only aussi meaning ‘therefore’ at the beginning of a clause requires inversion.
- Aussi, il est important de souligner… (Also, it is important to emphasise…) – no inversion.
- Aussi le gouvernement a‑t‑il décidé… (Therefore the government decided…) – inversion.
Examples
- Peut‑être les énergies fossiles seront‑elles remplacées d'ici la fin du siècle.Inversion with seront‑elles after peut‑être.
- À peine le sommet sur le climat s'est‑il achevé que les critiques ont commencé.Inversion with s’est‑il achevé after à peine; the second clause is introduced by que.
