Using the restrictive structure ne...que to express limitation or exclusivity ("only").

Grammar

Expressing “Only” with Ne…que

The basic negation ne…pas is studied in basic negation. The structure ne…que is not a true negation; it carries the meaning of ‘only’ or ‘nothing but’. It restricts the validity of the statement to the element placed after que.

Formation and Placement

ElementPositionExample
nebefore the verb (or auxiliary)Je ne mange que des légumes.
quebefore the restricted element (noun, number, infinitive, place, time)Elle ne boit que de l’eau.
Nous n’avons que deux jours.
Tu ne dois que te reposer.

Elements That Can Be Restricted

The particle que may precede a variety of restricted elements.

- Noun: Je n’ai qu’un frère.
- Number: Il ne lui reste que cinq euros.
- Infinitive: Je ne peux que vous conseiller d’attendre.
- Place: Nous ne sommes allés qu’à Paris.
- Time: Elle n’est restée qu’une heure.

Ne…que and the Passé Composé

In compound tenses, ne is placed before the auxiliary, and que is placed before the restricted element. For example: Je n’ai visité que deux musées. Elle n’a parlé que de son travail.

The structure ne…que is synonymous with the adverb seulement, but is preferred in more formal registers.
