Extending the COD System to the Plural

The singular direct object pronouns (me, te, le, la) are presented in direct object pronouns: singular. The plural forms are nous (us), vous (you, plural or formal), and les (them, any gender). Their placement follows the same rules.

Plural Direct Object Pronouns

Placement and Agreement

The plural pronoun occupies the same position as its singular counterpart: immediately before the conjugated verb, or before the infinitive in a two‑verb structure.

- Nous regardons les valises. → Nous les regardons.
- Tu veux écouter ces chansons ? → Tu veux les écouter ?
- Il a acheté les billets ? → Il les a achetés.

When a plural direct object pronoun precedes a passé composé formed with avoir, the past participle agrees in number and gender with that pronoun. In the example above, the masculine plural les triggers the addition of -s to the past participle: achetés. A detailed treatment of past participle agreement will be provided in a later lesson.

Negation with Plural COD

The negation bracket ne…pas encloses the pronoun and the verb as a single unit: Je ne les vois pas. Nous ne vous entendons pas. Il ne nous a pas invités. For the complete rules of negation, see basic negation.

Examples

Mes amis ? Je les ai vus hier à la gare.
Les replaces the plural noun mes amis. The past participle vus agrees in the masculine plural.
Vous nous attendez devant le guichet ?
Nous is the direct object of attendez, placed before the conjugated verb.
