The Imperative Mood
The imperative mood is used to give orders, extend invitations, or make suggestions. In this lesson the vous form (polite singular or plural address) and the nous form (equivalent to ‘let’s’) are introduced. The subject pronoun is omitted. For the conjugation of the present‑tense forms on which the imperative is based, see regular -ER verbs singular, regular -ER verbs plural, and the lessons on the irregular verbs être, avoir, aller, faire, vouloir, pouvoir, and devoir.

Formation Rules
The imperative is derived from the present‑tense vous or nous form by removing the subject pronoun:
- Vous écoutez. → Écoutez !
- Nous allons. → Allons !
For pronominal verbs, the reflexive pronoun is placed after the verb and connected with a hyphen. The pronoun vous is used for the vous imperative, and nous for the nous imperative:
- Vous vous levez. → Levez-vous !
- Nous nous levons. → Levons-nous !
Negation encloses the whole unit: Ne parlez pas ! Ne nous levons pas ! For negation rules, see basic negation.
Classroom and Everyday Commands
The imperative is frequent in classroom interaction: Écoutez bien ! Regardez le tableau ! Lisez le texte ! Ouvrez le livre ! Fermez la porte ! Asseyez-vous ! Levez-vous ! The nous form expresses shared activity: Allons-y ! (Let’s go!).
