Conjugation
The Descriptive Function of the Imparfait
The imparfait is the tense used to describe past circumstances: weather, physical appearance, feelings, time of day, and habitual or ongoing actions. It serves as the background against which specific events may be placed. The formation of the imparfait (stem from the nous form + endings -ais, -ait, etc.) is treated in imparfait stem formations.
Common Uses of the Imparfait for Description
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| Weather | Il faisait très froid ce jour-là. |
| Physical appearance | Elle portait une robe bleue et un chapeau. |
| Feelings / States | Je me sentais fatigué après le voyage. |
| Time of day / Scene | Il était minuit. Le ciel était noir. |
| Habits | Quand j’habitais à Bordeaux, je prenais le bus tous les jours. |
Sentence Patterns
The imparfait frequently appears in combination with the conjunction quand to express recurring past actions or states:
- Quand il pleuvait, nous restions à la maison.
- Quand j’étais petite, je jouais dans le jardin.
For descriptions of a past scene, the expressions c’était and il y avait are commonly used:
- C’était un samedi matin. Il y avait beaucoup de monde dans le magasin.
These structures allow the speaker to establish the setting before introducing a completed action (which will later be expressed in the passé composé).
Scope of This Lesson
This lesson concentrates exclusively on the descriptive and habitual uses of the imparfait. The contrast between the imparfait (background) and the passé composé (foreground events) will be examined in detail in a subsequent lesson. For the present, the imparfait should be used independently to describe past situations, without mixing it with the passé composé.
Examples
- Hier, il faisait beau et je me promenais au bord de la Garonne. The imparfait describes the weather (faisait) and the ongoing action (me promenais).
- Quand nous étions à l’hôtel, nous avions une belle vue sur la mer.The imparfait expresses a past state (étions) and possession (avions).
